The Questions to ask every School

 

Great, a school has offered you an interview, but they want you to send them a sample lesson plan, worse they may want you to present the lesson to a small group of people.  Don't panic!  Most people who teach English in Japan have never taught a class before they get off the plan.

 

Everyone knows at least one teachers, so ask him or her for help.  

 

During you interview lesson presentation, you will be teaching to pretend students either fellow interviewees or employees of the school.  So relax!  They will understand you.

 

Enthusiasm and confidence are your keys!  

 

Key it light, do not get bogged down with explain from behind the podium the different types of verb tense.  You should be creative and involve the (pretend) students.  The company knows that you may not have teaching experience, so relax and have fun.  

 

Remember to speak slowly and smile.

 

 

The Basic Lesson Plan Outline below is just a suggestion to get you started.  Remember, to use all resources that are available to you.

 

1. Introduction and lesson theme

2. Practice the course theme with dialog or sentence pattern

3. Student individual work

4. Apply the knowledge by using props and role-play 

5. Questions and answers

 

 

Props and Role-playing are essential, creativity a plus.  The props, such as flash cards, diagrams, news clippings, pictures, magazines and items from home, will involve and relax the students.  Also, try to integrate a role-playing scenarios, pattern substitution or game to energize and encourage the students to interact.

2. I will ask the students to insert words in the blanks.
3. I will read the first time.
4. The second time, the class will read the dialogue together.
5. In groups of two, the students will ask each other these questions.

E. Menus (10 minutes)

1. Handout and review the Steak House Restaurant menu hangouts.
a. Each student will receive a photocopied menu.
b. Have each student rotate reading the menus items aloud.
2. Ordering.
a. The students will now practice ordering with each other in their groups of two.
b. During this time, I will walk around and talk with each student.
c. I will role-play as the waiter and the students as the customers.

F. Dialogue (15 minutes)

1. Split into groups of two to create a dialogue with a minimum of 6 sentences.
2. Create the dialogue using the Attending a Business Lunch picture.
3. During this time, I will walk around and talk with each student. 
4. When complete, each group will read aloud their dialogue to the class.

G. Questions and review (5 minutes)

I. Introduction - "At the Restaurant" (2 minutes)


1. Write lesson outline on white board.
2. Split the students into groups of two or three.

II. Pattern - Ordering food (5 minutes)


1. I will write the following sentences on the white board. 
     Waiter: Are you ready to order?
     Customer: Yes, I would like ___________.
     Waiter: Would you like a beer to drink?
     Customer: No thank you. May I have a ___________.
     Waiter: May I suggest a ______ for desert?
     Customer: That sounds great.
2. I will ask the students to insert words in the blanks.
