Visa

Japan has several different types of visa classification: Diplomatic, Official, General, Tourist, Specified, and Work. Any foreign national who wants to work in Japan must have a valid work visa. A one-year work visa for English teachers is the most common means of working in Japan. A Bachelor's degree, Sponsor (company or resident, often your school), passport photos, Certificate of Eligibility, and visa application (at a Japanese consulate outside Japan) are necessary for obtain a work visa.

The paradox of working in Japan is that you need a visa to get a job and a job to get a visa. There are two ways to acquire a work visa. First, you go to Japan and job hunt while using a tourist visa. Though it may be easier to find a job with this route, the work visa may be more difficult to obtain, and if obtained, you will have to leave the country in order to enter under a work visa. The second option is to arrange a working visa before you arrive in Japan; most often your future company will sponsor you.

For information about a visa please contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).  Also, the Immigration Information Center provides consulting and information services for foreigners. If you are a citizen or national of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom currently residing in his or her country of citizenship, then you are eligible for a Working Holiday Visa.
